nThough they will never have seen
nsuch before, we leave special teas
nin painted ceramic bowls, orange
nand cherry jams, breads and linen napkins,
nbeside the remnants of their scattered bones.
n
nWe tie messages around green glass
nbottles of wine, flasks of olives, place them
non the surface of the sea, watch them
nsink slowly down to those who remain
namong the rubble of their flooded shelters.
nWere the current not so swift, we might
ndescend to deliver these gifts ourselves,
nurging all to eat, to drink.
n
nWe feed their cold emptiness
nwith fragrances of tropical orchids,
nthe blossoms of magnolia and plum,
nwith the perfume of our prayers for solace
nplaced to waft inward over the ashes
nof those entombed in desert caves.
n
nHere are matches, we say to the bodies
nfrozen in icy passes, huddled inside ragged
nanimal skins, kerosene and a lamp,
nwoolen coat, metal shovel, sharpened
nax, a saddle, a horse, silver spurs.
n
nIf any should remain wanting,
nyearning in their silent state, we offer
nfor sustenance a deeper vision of the space
nwhere their spirits now rest, recite for them
nthe latitude, the longitude, the mountain
ncontinent, the forest and prairie expanse
nof their dust and decimation circling
non a vibrant globe. Nebulas and galaxies,
nsuns and stellar time might sooth their disquiet,
nlift their souls to their rightful places.
n
nAnd to all those without names, we give
nmore than one name: homo habilis, homo
nerectus, fossil skeletons of rock, old
nplodders, old searchers, first wielders, fierce,
nsteadfast clingers—and in the here and now
nwe are determined—the unforsaken.
