nMeoto Iwa (Husband and Wife Rocks):
nMeoto Iwa is the symbol of Futami Okitama jinja. It has been said that there is a sacred stone 700m off the shore called "Okitama Shinseki", and Meoto Iwas has played a role of Torii. Do you know aboutTorii? It's an important part of a shrine, and Japanese people pass through it when you enter a shrine. Meoto means a couple. The big one is called Husband Rock. Its height is 9 meters, and about 40 meters around. The small one is called Wife Rock. Its height is 3.6 meters, and about 9 meters around. A couple of rocks are tied togethe by a strong straw rope. It is renewed three times a year (in May, September, and December). And it is said that this rope signifies the prevention of the world and the earthly life of God.
