I bought my little grandchild Ann
nA bright balloon,

nShe laughed and babbled with delight,

nAs by a thread she held it tight,

nIt climbed the sky;
nBut oh how sorrowful was she,

nAnd when at eve with sobbing cry
nShe saw the moon,
nShe pleaded to the pensive sky
nFor her balloon.

nO Little One, I pray that you
nIn years to be,
nWill hold a tiny baby too,
nAnd know its glee;
nThat yours will always be the thrill
nAnd joy of June,
nAnd that you never, never will
nCry for the moon.
