rnIn spring of youth it was my lot
rnTo haunt of the wide world a spot
rnThe which I could not love the less-
rnSo lovely was the loneliness
rnOf a wild lake, with black rock bound,
rnAnd the tall pines that towered around.

rnBut when the Night had thrown her pall
rnUpon that spot, as upon all,
rnAnd the mystic wind went by
rnMurmuring in melody-
rnThen- ah then I would awake
rnTo the terror of the lone lake.
rn
rnYet that terror was not fright,
rnBut a tremulous delight-
rnA feeling not the jewelled mine
rnCould teach or bribe me to define-
rnNor Love- although the Love were thine.
rn
rnDeath was in that poisonous wave,
rnAnd in its gulf a fitting grave
rnFor him who thence could solace bring
rnTo his lone imagining-
rnWhose solitary soul could make
rnAn Eden of that dim lake.
