In the ancient chinese folkfore, the god of the door is the god for keeping the door against the devil and evil. It is said that as early as in the 7th century. Emperor Taizong (627 - 649 A.D.) of the Tang dynasty once suffered from continual nightmare of ghosts and goblins for several days. Luckily he had two senior generals named Qin Qiong (a red faced man) and Yuchi Gong (a black faced man) guarding the door of his palace. The ghost and goblins were frightened by the might and force of these two generals and flied away. Gradually the emperor recovered. In order to be safe and sound forever, the emperor ordered that the pictures of the two generals be drawn on the leaves of the palace door.Since then the palace had been in peace and transquility without demons and ghost anymore. The story got around and the common people followed suit. Finally it become a custom and has been handed down to the present.
