Canon is offering a service upgrade addressed to the existing EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D. The service replaces the camera’s mode dial with a redesigned locking version similar to the one featured in Canon’s EOS 60D.

The redesigned dial includes a center button allowing users to change the dial setting by simply pressing it. Meanwhile, the lock feature keeps the dial from accidental changing during camera usage. The service will first be offered in the USA, Canada, and Japan by the end of this year. The modification alone will be offered globally later.

On the other hand, there are people commenting that Canon’s modification to its mode dial is somehow copying the idea previously applied by Pentax on its K-7 and K-5 cameras. Also, the modification was considered strange as Canon is not applying the redesigned dial onto its new products but instead offering it as a service upgrade
